Learning Gets Social
Today, the majority of learning is occurring outside of the profession’s
purview in what is known as informal learning. Many experts agree that the
majority of learning comes from asking other people how to do things. Spend
even a small amount of time using collaborative technologies, and it is clear
that the knowledge gained through informal channels can be much greater than
the knowledge gained through traditional, formal methods.
The question many of us are wrestling with is how to best use social media
to harness knowledge within our organizations and create structures around
informal learning. And while the sharing of information may not easily fall
into the paradigm of conventional training, it fits in a more modern learning
paradigm. That is, what is important in organizations is not training per se,
but employees’ ability to learn what they need to know, when they need
to know it, in a way that works most effectively for their learning style.
In this session, you will hear from several organizations that are using social
media very effectively for learning, how they are supporting knowledge sharing,
and understand how your organization can leverage the power of informal learning
now and in the future.

persuasively, position themselves as a strategic partner, and communicate a
compelling story about the impact of learning on business results.
Together with the Board of Directors and supported by a staff of more than
100 and a wide volunteer network, Tony is focused on helping members lead talent
management in their organizations, build their business skills, understand
the profession’s role in narrowing skills gaps, and connect their work
to the strategic priorities of business. ASTD is frequently quoted about these
trends and its own research in top-tier business publications such as BusinessWeek,
The Financial Times, and The Wall Street Journal.
With broad-based business, financial, operational, and technical management
