From The President's Pen

By: Leanne Batchelder, CIASTD 2008 President

Happy Spring, everyone! This is just a quick note before I jump in the family car for a lengthy road trip to Florida for spring break.

Your CIASTD board continues to bring you more ways to connect with peers and expand your knowledge of workplace learning practices. Here are just a few things we’ve been up to:

  • We held our first chapter webcast on Tuesday, April 1st as part of our CPLP Certification Support Program. The webcast eliminated travel time and location challenges, while reaching out to members from all over Central Indiana who are looking for assistance as they prepare to begin the CPLP Certification process. We look forward to more webcasts in 2008.
  • We held our first monthly program at the new Holiday Inn North location on March 28th with an elaborate simulation of a 4-day work week with various tasks, employee levels, and communication issues. The level of participant interaction, multi-room setup, and use of shoes and pocket change was innovative and effective. We hope to offer more simulation experiences in the future!
  • We are hosting our Chapter Coach, Geoffrey Woliner, from ASTD on April 17th to brainstorm ways to partner with nationals to bring you even more resources. We’ll be focused on scheduling a “State of the Industry” presentation later this year and hope to offer it as a webcast lead by ASTD Research personnel. In addition, Geoffrey is encouraging us to plan a regional conference with other chapters in Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky in 2009 or beyond. Chapters in Texas and Tennessee have been very successful with regional conferences in the past. With Geoffrey’s help, we’ll be exploring this possibility and connecting with those chapter leaders!
  • We are submitting our VIP Bucks Campaign and Monthly Program RFP Selection process for national recognition as part of ASTD’s Share Our Success (SOS) program. SOS is a way all chapters can share best practices and be recognized for their creative approaches. We were encouraged by nationals to submit these two programs to SOS after describing them at last fall’s ASTD Leadership Conference.

That’s the update for now! I encourage everyone to speak up and tell us what else we can be doing to bring you the resources and connections you need to be successful workplace learning professionals. I look forward to hearing your ideas! Until then, safe travels to those of you heading out for your own spring break adventures!

March Meeting Recap

By Samyra Fulton

Speaker Phil Novick presented Creating Partnerships Across Boundaries which focused around communication amongst all levels of an organization and effectively working together to reach a common goal.

During the presentation he facilitated a realistic scenario most of us face in our own organizations. The activity included the roles of customers, top level representatives (executive level), middle representatives (middle management), and bottom representatives (entry level). Working together in twelve minute increments, each representing a day, groups were given a specific task to complete beginning with no real direction. This caused confusion amongst the different groups and left each group unsure about their ability to deliver on their assignment. Additionally, customers became irritated and unsure the organization would be the right one to work with.

Every participant had a reflection log, and every 12 minutes each person took a couple minutes to document how they were feeling about their group and the other groups.

Midway through the activity Phil stopped the groups to debrief how each group was feeling about each other. There were many commonalities among the four groups such as, overwhelmed, uninformed, etc.

Groups then got back together to complete assignments with more direction and interaction amongst all four groups which resulted in a better product for the customers and more satisfaction for the organization.

Participants gained a whole systems view of the organization, enabling them to…

  • Understand more and blame less
  • Work more effectively with people at all levels and in all positions
  • Experience less stress while making greater contributions
  • Develop and lead energized, effective, powerful organizations
  • Produce better results for themselves and their organizations

Key points were discussed at the end of the presentation. These centered around how each group felt with gaps in communication and how much better organizations function with clear goals and clear communication.

Program Description:
While others focus solely on Gens X and Y, your competitive edge will be your organization’s ability to consistently draw out the best ideas, best performance, and longest retention of not just “up and comers,” but of “A Players” among Boomers and Veterans. Incorporating successes from Google, Days Inn, and many others, learn how to release full engagement, capture knowledge, train skills, and leverage the talents and experiences of Boomer and Veteran employees.

Program Objectives:
1.) Using corporate examples and the very latest research, this presentation shows how to assess your demographics, re-define retirement and the job, provide flexibility, mandate performance, and make engagement part of the culture of not just “up and comers,” but of “A Players” among Boomers and Veteran employees.

2.) Participants will receive research as well as strategic questions to use to motivate senior management to redesign current recruiting, work arrangement, performance management, and reward and recognition systems to significantly enhance innovation, creativity, and contributions from long-termers in the workplace.

3.) Participants will receive a detailed handout that includes the presentation, strategic questions, resources, and bibliography.
