When Training is Not Enough

Training is not the only answer
By: Dan Johnson

It's true -- workplace learning alone is not enough to address 80% of all workplace performance gaps. Unless we shift our focus from learning to performance, our jobs – and the organizations we work for – are in jeopardy.

Join us at the August 26 CIASTD University session on Human Performance Improvement (HPI). During this interactive session, we will answer the following questions:

1. What is the Human Performance Improvement model as defined by ASTD?

2. What tools can I use to identify performance gaps that are best addressed by training (learning) and performance gaps are best addressed by other strategies?

3. What is the difference between a business analysis and performance analysis?

4. How do I influence my clients (whether internal or external) to think strategically and invest their dollars in strategies that will produce measurable and sustainable results?

5. * Special Bonus * What can be done to ensure sustained improvement of worker performance?

This session can be taken as a stand-alone session by anyone who is interested. The session will be held Thursday, August 26, from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. at the Fishers Library. For more information, contact Dan Johnson at (317) 822-8530 or e-mail dan@performancemastery.com. To register, click here or contact CIASTD at 841-1395.

A Mindful Moment
By: Andrea Moore

"If you can't feed a hundred people, then feed just one."—Mother Teresa

As a workplace learning professional, your role exists to serve the organization(s) you support. With an eye on service and doing what you can to help, it’s easy to get caught up in trying to save or fix something. Time and time again, I see HR and workplace learning professionals putting undue pressure on themselves to make change within their organizations.

While this comes from a very positive place, the challenge is there is a tendency to get stuck due to feeling frustrated or overwhelmed when you’re focusing on something that isn’t within your sphere of influence. In order to be most effective in providing service, put your energy and attention on what you can do. Ask yourself the empowering question: What is it that I can influence? There will always be an answer to that question.

Andrea Moore is the President of CIASTD and a Senior Consulting Manager at FlashPoint; contact Andrea at amoore@FlashPointHR.com.

Don't Struggle Alone!

It’s time to pick the brains of your peers
By: Bill Mugavin

Thinking about applying for the CPLP but want to know more about how it works? Or, are you already in the process and want some insights on how to best to prepare?

The old saying is “experience is the best teacher", but it doesn’t necessarily have to be your experience! CIASTD University has put together a panel of Workplace and Learning Professionals who have earned the CPLP designation and who are anxious to share their experience and insights with you. Panel members will share the glorious and grueling details of the CPLP certification process including:

• Credential benefits they have personally realized. Yes! It is absolutely worth it.
• Identify the benefits of CPLP credentials
• Review the ASTD Competency model
• Analyze the focus and weightings of the knowledge-based exam and the work product
• Determine study strategies and test-taking tips
• Discuss the CPLP certification process

Remember, the CIASTD University is about more than just CPLP preparation. The program offers a broad range of industry knowledge for anyone who wants to develop as a Workplace Learning and Performance Professional. We have made it easier for you to learn and grow by building in session and pricing options that work for your schedule and individual goals. You can now enroll for just one or two sessions!

• Single Session: Members - $75, Non-members - $95
• Two Sessions: Members - $125, Non-members - $150

Get started on or continue your professional journey by joining us on August 18th from 4pm-7pm at the Fishers Public Library for the CPLP Prep Session. We look forward to sharing our experience and helping you take a step ahead.
