 Over
the last decade our profession has evolved considerably. This
has caused growing pains but has also led to exciting opportunities.
I feel fortunate to be serving our chapter at this important
juncture. As the leading-edge workplace learning association
in Indiana, CIASTD is set for an incredible year of growth.
Amid all the activity, we want to make sure we stay focused
on and execute our chapter’s vision and mission. We aim
to offer members quality experiences by focusing on our three-year
strategic plan that includes the following priorities: 1) create
and implement in-depth development opportunities; 2) improve
the stability and continuity in the chapter structure through
a strong volunteer structure; and 3) raise awareness about the
ASTD competency model.
To support
these priorities, we have developed the following key initiatives.
We also feel they will help you as you continue to make strategic
contributions to your own organization.
Membership
Our goal—to increase new memberships so we continue
to grow as a chapter.
Benefit—you
will feel a renewed sense of value from your membership by volunteering
your talents to the chapter and you will benefit from networking
with a more diverse group of professionals.
Fall
Education Conference
Our goal—to reinvent the fall conference to model
learning as a process, not just an event.
Benefit—you
will learn from the content, foster new relationships with your
peers, and be linked to creative solutions you can use in your
organization.
Communication
Our goal—to improve the value and usability of
the CIASTD website to provide benefits to current members and
attract new members.
Benefit—you
will have access to new resources and dynamic member benefits.
Finance
Our goal—to refine and market corporate sponsorship
packages to support the growing services of our chapter.
Benefit—you
will have increased opportunities to support our chapter through
sponsorship while at the same time gaining exposure for your
business. Also, you will be able to learn about innovative products
and services that you can apply to your work.
Certification
(CPLP)
Our goal—to create and maintain a CPLP study
group, manage a library of study resources, and support the
successful certification process of our members.
Benefit—you
will have access to the support you need from those who are
already CPLP-certified and increase your likelihood of passing
the exam.
Programs
Our goal—to provide members with high-quality
professional development opportunities and increase the flexibility
of our program formats.
Benefits—you
will build quality peer relationships by regularly attending
our monthly programs and build your competencies as a workplace-learning
professional.
Although
our docket is full, our energetic and committed board members
will be leading a strong volunteer team to realize success in
each of these areas. If you are interested in participating
on any of our standing committees, please contact me or another
board member for more information.
While the
author of this quote is often contested, its message is clear:
“What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny
matters compared to what lies within us.” We intend to
make it a great year!
I hope to
see you all at the February monthly program.

We
invite you to attend the CIASTD meeting on February 23 where
we will welcome Elaine Voci, Ph.D., who has been running her
own private practice for over 10 years. Are you familiar with
Martin Seligman's best selling book Authentic Happiness which

more than 200 colleges and graduate schools in the US offer
classes on finding "true happiness" and measuring
"signature strengths"? You will find out what it means
to you as a workplace-learning professional, and as an evolving
human being.
This fast-moving,
highly experiential and interactive program facilitated by Elaine
Voci, Ph.D., will lead you to some very individual, personal
answers that can alter how you experience lasting happiness.
Elaine's grasp of the content and her warm style will engage
you and encourage your future exploration.

Making
Training Stick Success with Attendees
On Friday, January
23rd, CIASTD welcomed Linda Eaton of the Galileo Initiative. The focus
of the program was determining how to offer training that will result
in sustainable change. Linda discussed both individual beliefs that
must be addressed in order to create change and organizational beliefs
that must be addressed in order to create organizational cultural changes.
Participants were encouraged to consider the idea of a belief window
which affects our behaviors and ultimately affects the results of any
change initiative. By focusing on inscribing new experiences and ideas
on the belief windows of training attendees, sustainable change can
occur. Linda’s presentation was exciting, engaging, entertaining,
and educational.
What did participants
have to say?
“Excellent
presentation!”
“One of the best speakers I have ever seen!”
“My way of thinking about training shifted completely this morning.”
“Hats off to the program committee. The presentation rocked!”

Company:
Catalyst Organizational Change (www.catalystoc.com)
Position: Owner & Chief Catalyst
In Training and Development Since: 1994
CIASTD Member Since: January 2007
Describe
your position at your current employer.
In November 2006, I started a new venture called Catalyst Organizational
Change. Currently, I am the owner and sole employee. I provide
management-consulting services for leaders navigating through complex
organizational change. I engage the heads, hearts, and hands of change
leaders and their teams to achieve smoother transitions. My areas of
expertise include:
- Building the
Case for Change
- Crafting Change
Strategy
- Improving Decisions
- Opening Lines
of Communication
- Designing Metrics
& Dashboards
- Accelerating
Project Teams
What I love
doing most in my job is when I...can provide unexpected value.
Clients really appreciate when a consultant is less expensive or quicker
than expected. Consultants can achieve those results through efficiency
and hard work. Figuring out how to wow a client is a big challenge and
a very satisfying one.
The book
I read most recently for work is...Five Wisdoms for Entrepreneurial
Success (Practical Experience & Biblical Perspective) by Todd
Hopkins. I rarely finish a business book because of the repetitive nature
of the genre. Hopkins' book is a notable exception, combining business
and spiritual insights. One chapter is entitled, “Enjoy Your Family.”
I love that.
The book
I most recently read for pleasure is...Catcher in the Rye
by J.D. Salinger. I think it is the third or fourth time I have
read it, but I'm always impressed by the writing and amused by the story.
What I did
before I worked for my current employer was...
The two themes that dominate my professional career are "leadership"
and "change". My first "real job" (besides my Topics
paper route at age 9 that my wife says doesn't count) was as a Second
Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps. I commanded a tank platoon.
I went on to serve as a tank company executive officer. My last job
in the Marine Corps was as a Naval ROTC Instructor at Auburn University
where I trained officer candidates and taught undergrad courses in military
history, leadership, and ethics. The two key lessons I learned about
training while in the Marine Corps were “train the way you fight"
(make training as realistic as possible), and "train with what
you’ve got" (you never have all the resources that you would
like, but you must forge ahead making the best use of available resources).
After seven years in the Corps, I went from Captain of Marines to "Captain
of Industry," working for six years with Guidant Corporation, a
pioneering manufacturer of lifesaving technologies in cardiovascular
medicine. I worked in project management in R&D, led a business
process re-engineering team, did financial analysis for our sales organization,
and for the last 18 months helped plan and implement the integration
of the U.S. Sales forces when Boston Scientific and Abbott Laboratories
acquired Guidant. This last role at Guidant was my most rewarding, since
it was a difficult multi-bidder acquisition. I helped guide the integration
of 430 salespeople from different cultures into one team with a consistent
and optimistic voice to the customer, only four months after closing
the deal. I had the opportunity to coordinate the work of 25 sub-teams
with such disparate functions as HR, Regulatory, IT, Marketing, and
Finance. I have served as a strategic and leadership advisor to Marines,
senior corporate executives, and small business owners. These experiences
have prepared me well to become an independent consultant in the service
of leaders facing complex organizational change.
Describe
your childhood and educational experiences.
Except for a 4-year stint in South Bend, I grew up in Indianapolis,
attending Washington Township schools. I graduated from the United States
Naval Academy in 1993 with a Bachelors of Science in Systems Engineering.
I then received a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering from the
University of Maryland, also in 1993, and later earned an MBA from Auburn
University with majors in Finance and Information Systems.
Describe
your family.
My wife Kim and I were high school sweethearts, and we have known each
other for over half our lives. We dated for six years before getting
married and celebrated our 12th anniversary in October. We have a 6-year-old
daughter named Serae (rhymes with “hurray") a 3-year-old
son named Kael (rhymes with "male"), and a 9-month-old son
named Zeff (rhymes with "Jeff").
If you really
knew me, you would know... that I'm always looking to build
a network of like-minded strategic partners who want to help change
the world, one person and one company at a time.
