You
cannot prevent the birds of sorrow from flying over your
head, but you can prevent them from building nests in
your hair. -- Chinese Proverb
The unemployment rate in Indiana has increased dramatically
in the last few months; everyday, you hear about organizations
downsizing and letting go of large numbers of employees.
Perhaps you or someone you know has been affected by the
economic downturn we are in the midst of.
There are certainly plenty of challenges to go around.
There will always be challenges and situations you cannot
do anything
about, but what you can control is the impact the situation
has on you and how you choose to relate to it. The challenges
present a tremendous opportunity for you to rise up and
leverage the strength within you. Rather than getting tangled
up in
the challenge, step back and observe it with curiosity,
knowing there is an important opportunity within the very
thing that
feels most difficult.

By:
Michelle Burke, VP of Communications
The communications committee is off
to a super start and have many great ideas to change the way
we communicate with
you – our members! You’ll see some changes in the way
we approach communications this year as we have lots of new voices
on the committee and have added new director positions to focus
specifically on communication channels and marketing efforts.
Overall goals of the communications committee for 2009:
-
Create
a common approach to branding for messaging/communications
for CIASTD – including some brand standards and
a branding toolkit
-
Strive
to use different communication channels for members to
share best practices
-
Create
and follow a structured communication plan and marketing
plan

New
Programming Offers for 2009
By:
Kris Taylor, VP of Programs
2009 will be a year where we stretch our programming
opportunities and try new options. Of course we will continue
to have great monthly programs, but, in addition, we are going
to enable members to learn and connect in new ways.
- Look
for pod casts and webinars as we explore how to leverage
technology to reach members.
- We’ll
deepen our efforts to reach out and partner with other organizations
on some joint programming, including
a service project later this year.
- Also,
we are putting in place a way for learning professionals
to
network and learn over facilitated lunch discussions
across the city.
All of
our planning is a result of what we heard from you – in
our conversations and via our online survey. Please continue
to let us know what works and what doesn’t, and keep
your eyes open for lots of great program options this year.
Connect
& Learn from Your Desk
Andrea
Moore, CIASTD President, is curious about how participants
of the January 23 program (Financial Literacy and Business
Acumen for the Workplace Learning Professional) are applying
the key messages. Check out the discussion on Ning and post
your thoughts! http://centralinastd.ning.com/
What is Ning?
Ning is a private social network created by CIASTD members
for members. This new site allows you to start a discussion
on a topic of interest, create a network of friends and professionals,
and even share photos and videos you believe other chapter
members will find interesting.

| Put
What Needs Done in Paragraph One |
By: Stu Tanquist
Last month's writing tip, use a forecasting subject
line, showed you how to turn your readers from passive to active
and bring them into
paragraph one with an inquiring mind. Now's your chance to further
pique their interest by giving them your "bottom line" up
front.
This month's writing tip is common sense, but not common practice.
Common Sense
It's common sense if you want to get things done. You get things
done by being up front and clear with the reader. Put your most important
idea in the opening paragraph, and then make everything that follows
support it.
It's common sense if you want to be read. The first questions readers
ask of any document are, "How does this document affect me?
Do I have to do anything?" When readers can't find these answers
quickly or clearly, they stop reading. They put it down in their "to
read later" file with good intentions.
Not Common Practice
This writing tip is not common practice - which is unfortunate for
readers, writers and the organizations in which they work. Look at
most of the emails and other documents that you read (and maybe write!)
Most business professionals put the most important thing to the readers
- what they need to do - in the most difficult to find place: in
the middle, near the end, or absent all together. Only 1% of the
emails - even those written by senior executives - state what needs
to get done in paragraph one. This results in confusion that hinders
progress and derails projects.
Try It and See What Happens
Putting what you want to get done in paragraph one is a simple yet
effective way to get things done. This common sense tactic is rarely
used. Make it common practice and see what happens.
This writing tip is easier said than done. Next month we will show
you five ways to put this tip into practice - making it easy for
the reader and the writer!
Stu Tanquist served on the board of the third largest ASTD chapter
for four years and authored two best selling Info-Lines. He teaches
employees how to meet important deadlines and keep projects on target
by writing emails that get things done. Stu can be reached at www.BerryWritingGroup.com or 612-799-1686.
