Are Looking For...YOU! |
It's
time to "Get Personal"
By:
David Wachtel, VP of Volunteers and Administration
This is “The Year to Get Personal” at
CIASTD. And we want you to get involved.
So how do you “get personal” and get involved? The
first step is to volunteer for a committee. Now you may think, “I’m
too busy, have too much to do…” The time commitment
is small but the rewards large.
Volunteering is the easiest and best way to not only help further
the chapter’s missionbut for you to get an opportunity
to meet and develop relationships with other performance improvement
and human resource professionals. Volunteering is one of the
best ways to make new friends and strengthen existing relationships.
With multiple committee opportunities, you can find an area
that best fits your skills and have fun making a difference.
We have committees
that work on the monthly programs, technology, finance, communications,
membership, and our Fall Conference.
So if your area of interest is financial, there’s a committee.
If you work in the IT area, we have a committee. Interested in
marketing or writing? Communications may be your spot. If you
are wondering how you might eventually become a member of the
chapter Board of Directors, volunteering is the first step.
As a workplace learning
professional, I try to create as many opportunities as possible
to meet and develop relationships with
others in the field. Many business opportunities have come from
those relationships. When I joined CIASTD, my primary goal was
to meet and get to know as many people as I could. Volunteering
and being a Board member has greatly increased the number of
people I know, but the level of relationship I have with several
members has increased. You get to see each other “in action”.
You can develop a level of trust that would not exist otherwise.
I know of two people in the chapter that have their jobs today
due to CIASTD relationships.
So how do you make
this happen? Leave a few moments at the end of our February
meeting for our “Volunteer Fair”.
Each of the committee chairs will be available to talk about
what their committee does, the jobs that need to be done, and
what skills will work best. If you are interested, you can get
involved and “get personal”.
Block out a few moments
after the February meeting to meet our Board chairs and learn
more about how you can “get personal” with
CIASTD.

Andrea Moore, CIASTD 2010 President
As a workplace-learning professional, you have
tremendous opportunity each day to impact individuals in
many ways. Those situations that may seem of little importance
or no consequence to you could in fact be a life-changing
event for another.
A recent experience reminded me of this important message.
I received an e-mail from a woman who is participating in
a program I am facilitating. I was curious when I saw her
name in my inbox the day following a training session, and
when I read her words, I was very surprised. Her point was
clear and brief . . . she had been inspired by my vulnerability.
She said when I spoke with such openness during the learning
experience the day before, it reminded her that she also
has permission to be open and share who she is.
I am thankful for her note, as it serves as an important
reminder not to neglect those opportunities that seem to
be casually offered. In each moment, I am influencing, and
I do so from my heart.

A
tidbit to keep us learning & growing
By:
Jim Smith, JR of Jimpact
From his book Crash and Learn: 600+ Road-Tested Tips to Keep Audiences
Fired Up and Engaged!
“Use
more picture than words on your slides. A great majority (55
percent) of your participants are visual learners. Have you
ever heard someone say, ‘Do you see what I am saying?’ Remember,
a picture is worth a thousand words. So, add more pictures to
your word-laden slides.”

CIASTD is always looking for new contributors both to the
monthly programs and The Facilitator newsletter.
For information
on speaking at a future CIASTD meeting, visit www.CIASTD.org.
If writing
is your specialty, we are always on the lookout for articles which
further learning in the areas of training and development. While
we may not be able to publish every article we receive, we believe
each issue of The Facilitator would be enriched by the
addition of articles from CIASTD members. As a bonus, there’s
VIP bucks awaiting each published article! Submit articles by
emailing them to martie.hoofer@salliemae.com.
We prefer files in Microsoft Word or Adobe pdf format.
