The Numbers Are Growing

Are you part of the crowd?
By: Lida Pinkham

2010 is a year to get connected to other workplace learning & development professionals, but so often we don’t take the time to make the face-to-face connections which help us learn. There are advantages to living in such a “wired” age!

As of December 29, here’s how CIASTD stacked up in the social networking world -

  • 37 fans on FaceBook
  • 45 connections on LinkedIn
  • 124 members on CIASTD’s Ning Network
  • 65 followers on Twitter with 165 tweets

Social networking is nothing to be afraid of! Ask around and jump into whichever option many of your friends (or your kids!) use. Then, make sure to surf over to CIASTD’s corner of the world.

If you want to get connected but just don’t know where to start, use the technology you do understand, and e-mail Lida Pinkham. If you can use e-mail, you’ll be able to master social networking too!

Is your On The Job (OTJ) training program a bit lacking? Does your tenured employee feel ill-equipped to shepherd the newest employee? CIASTD member Bruno Neal has written an article for T+D Magazine which will provide both you as an L&D professional and your tenured employee some guidance in moving from OTJ to on-the-job coaching (OJC).

And The Winner Is...

A Talented Group Leading Into A New Decade
By: Brian Lusk

After a warming breakfast and a lively “silent” auction, some much deserved awards were presented at the December CIASTD Holiday Gala.

Kris Taylor was honored with the “Hall of Fame” Award. This award is presented to a long term volunteer who has held various committee and/or board positions, and who is responsible for implementing a variety of changes, processes, and/or programs which benefit the chapter. Kris displayed leadership and dedication by serving most recently on the Programs Committee. Kris saw the creation of new programs and ideas with the unknown forecast of declining monthly and fall educational conference attendance. A committee member commented, “Kris' personal work had increased to out of state which did not hamper her leadership, late night calls, and direction and guidance to the director's and committee members of the Programming Committee.” This year saw great programming efforts through the Food for Thought sessions, monthly programming, challenge course special event, and a well-run fall educational program which where each influenced by Kris’ guidance and direction.

The “President’s Award” was taken home by Lida Pinkham. The “President’s Award” is given to an active board or committee member for exceptional service in the current year. One board member recently wrote in an e-mail to Lida, “Thanks for taking the lead – you are always so proactive!!!” Lida has been a great asset to the CIASTD Board. She has been a pioneer in the newly developed role of VP of Technology, starting it from scratch and has worked closely with other board members to achieve goals and move our chapter forward.

Karen Katz was recognized as “The Rookie of the Year”. This award is given to an active committee member in her first year of service to the chapter. Karen has worked this year on the Special Events Committee and has helped lead the chapter to a stable financial standing for the coming year. Karen's work with Kris Taylor was remarkable with locating and securing sponsorships for the Fall Educational Conference. A committee member commented, “Karen is detailed oriented, organized and offered great support; her dedication to this year’s conference makes her truly deserving of the Rookie of the Year Award.”

Free Webcast for CIASTD Chapter Members

Free Webcast for CIASTD chapter members - Bridging the Skills Gap

When was the last time you assessed the skills of your workforce? From basic skills to more technical, professional, management, and leadership skills, does your workforce possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities to move your organization to the next stage of success? In an updated white paper about the impact of the skills shortage, ASTD examines what business leaders and learning professionals can do to assess the severity of the skills gap, and how to close those gaps to contribute to the growth and success of their organizations. The paper includes eight case studies from public and private sector organizations.

"Bridging the Skills Gap: New Factors Compound the Growing Skills Shortage" will be offered at 2 p.m. ET on Wednesday, January 20.

This session will be facilitated by Jennifer Homer, Vice President, Communications and Member Relations, ASTD.

It’s a New Year . . . Time to Hit the Reset Button

On January 29, CIASTD will kick off a new year of programming with Jim Smith, aka “Mr. Energy,” who will remind us the new year presents a great opportunity to hit the reset button.

I had the privilege of experiencing Mr. Energy at ASTD’s Leadership Conference in October; I left the session feeling invigorated, as he shared some very empowering messages:

  • “5 to 10% of people set goals each year; 90% of what those individuals write down comes to fruition.”
  • “Our habits are driven by our mindsets—shift from woe is me to grow is me.”
  • “Do you dance when you hear the music, or do you ask to turn it down?”
These messages are an important reminder that I am in the driver’s seat and creating my life as I go. The new year (as with any new year or new day for that matter) presents a tremendous opportunity to live life on purpose, being intentional with my focus.

Andrea Moore is the President of CIASTD and a Senior Consultant at FlashPoint; contact Andrea at amoore@FlashPointHR.com.
