Need a WLP? Find a WLP!

We are a chapter full of Workplace Learning Professionals (WLPs), so why does it seem so hard to find one when you need one?

Many of you are often tasked with a project requiring expertise outside of your organization. Do these situations sound familiar?
• You need a third-party, objective yet expert opinion on a performance or process issue.
• You need to develop an e-learning course but do not have the time or experience to develop it internally.
• You are planning a departmental team-building workshop and want an external facilitator to conduct the event.

How do you find the help you need?

CIASTD’s Find a WLP online directory is a great place to start! Go to the chapter’s website at www.ciastd.com and select Marketplace from the main menu. From there, click Find a WLP. Once there, you can search for a specific area of expertise, service, person, or firm. Just type in what you’re looking for, select your search criteria and go! You’ll be amazed at what you’ll find—lists of WLPs ready to assist you. Every WLP listing provides you with detailed contact information and, in many cases, links to their websites.

Did I mention this searchable WLP directory is FREE? What an amazing resource!

Are some of you reading this, thinking, “Hey, I’m a WLP? How the heck do I join this directory? How can I expand my reach to other CIASTD members who might benefit from the services I provide?”

It’s easy to join. Simply access the Find a WLP site and look for the link that says: Click here to create your own WLP. Click this link and complete the online form to join the WLP directory. There is a minimal charge to join: a 6-month listing costs $75 while a full year listing is $100. Belonging to this directory practically pays for itself even if it results in just one project a year. Why wouldn’t you give it go?

I can tell you first hand that being included in this directory is well worth it. I’ve been able to complete multiple projects with a variety of CEDIA members who found the firm I work for in the WLP directory.

If you are already in the directory, be sure to renew your listing! Listings that are not currently paid in full will be removed at the end
of this month. If you are not in the directory, what are you waiting for? If you haven't used the directory before, let the search begin.

  • Creating the environment for employees to develop all types of skills
  • Helping decision makers understand usefulness of employee development
  • Facilitating best practices for career development courses

The next two meetings are planned for Friday, March 14th and Friday, April 18th when we'll explore how to gain management buy-in to career development offerings and how to measure/track initiatives. If you're interested in joining this Career Development online learning group, please contact ciastd@mprecords.com.

Performance Improvement OLG
The Performance Improvement OLG is off to a great start, with a couple of Forums on the CIASTD site and a group meeting scheduled for March 26 th at 8:00 A.M. at MP Records office.

Members of the PI OLG are looking forward to exploring issues of performance improvement and systems thinking, including:

  • Learning more about how to diagnose and design interventions to
    improve performance within organizations.
  • Exploring performance models and best practices.
  • Exploring the connection between the brain and learning, and the
    connection between learning and performance.

If these topics sound like fun to you, come and join us on the CIASTD Forums or at our first meeting on the 26th. If you have questions, feel free to contact the coordinator of the group, Lisa Meece, at lisa@bottomlineperformance.com or 317-626-2163.

Training Tip = Accelerated Learning Part 2 – Preparation

By Sharon McGuire

What is Accelerated Learning (AL)? To recap Part 1 – The Basics, AL is a training method that increases the efficiency, effectiveness, and retention of knowledge and skills in an environment that is positive and exciting. A key aspect of AL is the deliberate management of the “learning state.” AL creates and manages the conditions that facilitate learning and applies techniques to reduce barriers that prevent learning from happening.

Part two of this series will focus on the first of the four phases of this training methodology:

Preparation

We all know the first three rules of training, right? Prepare, prepare, and prepare! This method of training is no different.

At the heart of any successful training, you must have engaged learners. So how do you prepare for that? There are three elements incorporated into the preparation phase: Learner Preparation Package, Environment, and Peripherals. Those are some pretty big terms to discuss pre-work, atmosphere, and stuff around the room! So let’s take a look at each of these elements in detail.

Learner Preparation Package (pre-work) should set a collaborative learning tone and highlight the benefits of the training or the WIIFM (What’s In It For Me). Peoples’ time is at a premium, and they won’t attend training just for the sake of training—so you need to sell it to the learners. However, how you package the pre-work can positively (or negatively) influence the learners’ expectations of the event. Here are some questions to consider:

  • What first impression does your package send? If you’re not sure, ask someone who is not associated with the training to look at it and give you honest feedback, or ask someone who is similar to the target audience of the training to review it and give you feedback. Here are some things to watch for:
    • Misspellings
    • Consistency in terminology throughout material
    • Are the materials easy to read?
    • Are the instructions easy to understand?
    • Are you overloading the learner with material?
  • What should the package contain? You should include only relevant information that facilitates the learner’s ability to absorb and apply the knowledge and skills given during the training. This could include any of the following:
    • Informational material about the training such as a brochure, pamphlet or flyer
    • Reading material
    • Survey/Profile
    • Pre-test
    • Cover Letter
    • Software
    • Resources to complete the pre-work
    • Any information they will need to attend the training

Be cautious about material overload prior to the training. You don’t want to scare away or intimidate potential attendees. If you have eager learners, give them additional material and resources at the end of the training.

The Environment (seating arrangement/atmosphere) is often the most overlooked aspect of AL because we usually just deal with what we have—right?

Example: I used to work in a building that ran parallel to a set of railroad tracks. After you’ve worked there for a little while, the train noise fades to background noise and you tend not to notice it’s there. That was until learners in my class indicated that the train noise startled them when it went by and often times they couldn’t hear.

But dealing with what you have may be creating barriers to learning and disengaging learners. So don’t overlook the environmental factor when preparing for training. Here is a quick review of seating patterns and a diagram link listing both advantages/disadvantages of the arrangement:

The last element is Peripherals (stuff around the room). Learning is enhanced when the environment is positive and stimulating. Picture yourself walking into a training session, the room has no windows and the walls are painted grey without any posters or colorful artwork hanging on them. How stimulated would you feel to learn anything during that session--probably not much? On the flip side, be aware of items in the room that can distract participants and create barriers to learning such as:

  • Ticking clocks
  • Moving displays
  • Windows with constant walk-by traffic
  • Ice machines
  • Coffee makers
  • Even things the facilitator may be wearing (e.g. clinking jewelry)

As fundamental as it seems, these three elements can enhance or detract from engaging your learners. Prepare carefully and don’t overlook the small details.

Next month’s installation of Part 3 will focus on the presentation part of AL.

March's Upcoming Session - Creating Business Partnership with Phil Novick

Friday, March 28, 2008
The Organization Workshop: Creating Partnership Across Boundaries
Phil Novick, Power+Systems, Inc.

Program Description:The Organization Workshop gets to the heart of partnership in organization life – why partnership is critical to organizational success, what gets in the way of it developing, and the role of leaders in making it happen.
The centerpiece of this dynamic leadership development program is an organization exercise in which participants find themselves in roles as top executives, middle managers, workers and customers interacting in a fast-paced environment. This visceral approach enables the learning to get beyond the head level to where it hits home and sticks.

In combination with these engaging, high-energy activities, there are practical strategic frameworks based on the work of Barry Oshry. These frameworks help participants make sense of what they’re learning and enable them to connect to experiences in their own organizations. The application activities help keep the lessons alive once participants are back at work.

Participants will gain a whole systems view of the organization, enabling them to…

  • Understand more and blame less
  • Work more effectively with people at all levels and in all positions
  • Experience less stress while making greater contributions
  • Develop and lead energized, effective, powerful organizations
  • Produce better results for themselves and their organizations

Helping Our Learners Learn

By Martie Hoofer

So you have a blank PowerPoint or e-learning slide. What do you fill it with? How do you get the parts to work together to help your learner assimilate the information you want him to learn?

Sharon Boller from Bottom-Line Performance worked through those questions during the February CIASTD monthly meeting. She first explained how the learner’s brain takes in, processes, and stores information (cognitive learning theory). Sharon walked the group through the application of 6 principles to “enhance presentation of content and increase learning efficiency”.

1. Use both words and pictures
2. Integrate graphics and texts
3. Use audio – not text – to explain visuals.
4. Avoid being redundant with audio and text (unless designing e-learning for English as a Second Language learners).
5. Get rid of the extraneous stuff
6. Personalize it

Sharon then shared 3 principles to apply when designing practice for learners to enhance their retention.
1. Make it job-relevant and sufficient
2. Use worked examples
3. Intersperse practice and examples throughout = at just at the end.

Whether you are doing e-learning right now or not, this was a presentation with many points which could be applied immediately to all instructional design tasks.
