Looking for a Few Good Candidates
It’s that time of year—to select the best candidates
to fill open CIASTD board positions. Every year, CIASTD’s
Board of Directors evolves and changes. Board members who have
fulfilled their board commitments move to other board positions,
renew their current board position, or decide to leave the
board to try other things! This movement always causes a few
open spots on the Board.
This year, we’ve
restructured the Board, which has also created two brand
new Board positions and several Director
positions. Take a look:

By restructuring the Board and adding new positions, we can
focus more time and energy on specific areas within the chapter:
-
Recruiting,
coordinating and maximizing our volunteers
-
Offering
a more robust programming schedule that includes
a mix of networking opportunities, online
programs, traditional face-to-face programs, and special events
-
Expanding
our current website with the latest technology
and online tools so that the website
truly is a resource as well as an online community for our members
-
Providing
more oversight with the chapter’s finances,
establishing realistic
budgets and making sound financial decisions.
We’ve created Director-level positions under several
of
the Board positions. This allows the board members to be
more
strategic, long-term thinkers and planners with the Directors
being
very tactical and “this year” thinkers and
planners.
Directors would not be required to attend board meetings,
although
they are more than welcome to join us! We will plan Total
Leadership meetings 2-3 times a year with both groups
to
ensure we’re all communicating and working together
effectively.
Board members will recruit and select all Directors.
We’ve heard a lot of talk this election year about experience
and change, getting more of the same or thinking of new ideas.
CIASTD needs a little bit of all of those things. We’re
looking for people who want to actively participate, share
ideas, and pull from their own experiences and unique perspectives.
We want leaders who want to try something new or move out
of their comfort zone. We want leaders who are willing to push
back, to offer alternatives, and to give and receive feedback
openly.
I realize that’s
quite a wish list of wants and needs, but I know those leaders
are out there in our chapter, just
waiting for the chance to get involved!
Just download
the Board
Leader Information Form. Feel free to attach a resume or
any additional information when submitting. The deadline is
September 30, 2008.
The three open Board
positions are described below. They are your’s for
the taking! Our selection process includes an initial screening
of all completed applications and resumes,
phone interviews and face-to-face interviews for select candidates.
Once we slate the
best candidates into the right positions, we’ll post the slate for an entire chapter vote. Chapter
members must vote ‘yes” or “no” to
the whole slate, not to each individual position. We hope to
introduce the 2009 board at the Fall Education Conference!
So leaders, what are you waiting for?

Board Positions |
Vice
President of Programming
This
new Board position is critical to the development
of our membership. The primary focus of this role
is the centralization of all of the chapter’s
programming, including monthly programs, any special
conferences throughout the year, and/or online programming.
The responsibility of this position is to create
multiple options for members to learn and grow. Working
with Directors which support this position, the VP
of Programming strategically aligns the chapter programming
with the needs of our membership and topics that
are most important to workplace learning professionals.
Vice
President of Technology
This new Board position is instrumental in taking our chapter to the
next level. This strategic position is responsible for defining how we
can leverage technology to support the chapter’s success. From
the organization’s website to the use of technology for the delivery
of educational programs for our members, this position works closely
with other Board positions, our website vendor, and association management
firm to ensure we are making the most effective use of technology.
Vice
President of Finance
This role is critical to the chapter’s success. The individual
in this strategic position maintains the chapter's financial records
and directs the chapter's accounting, budgeting, investment and financial
reporting process, including the management of accounts payable and receivable.
Through regular maintenance of the chapter’s finances, this individual
identifies areas of concern for the board to review and raises any red
flags.

Monthly Meeting: Organizational Change Management |
CIASTD
September Meeting
Friday, September 19, 2008
Program
Description:
Many
organizations are undergoing significant change – some of
it is even planned! It is not uncommon that change initiatives
achieve mediocre results or fail. Delays occur due to politics,
lack of planning, unforeseen issues, or other reasons which increase
the overall costs. According to one study, businesses spend more
money on the change than the change ends up providing. This session
will highlight change management best practices and attitudes tending
to facilitate productive organizational change. The point is to
facilitate greater economic value faster by effectively developing,
deploying, and aligning
the company’s assets. Topics include:
- Tendency
to resist change. Organizations have their destructive
or maladaptive responses to situations. Resistance from
those who: might lose power, influence, control; do not
understand the implications of the change; do not trust
the “change agents”.
- Change
management strategies and tactics
- Importance
of social and informal networks
- The
challenge: Using a combination of tactics at the right
time with the right people to get them to think and behave
differently.
- Political
dynamics: Making constructive use of individuals and factions
exerting influence for their own agendas.
- Tips
on managing the changes that the change initiative brings
about inside the company.
- Participants
will receive up to date resources including assessment
tools, questionnaires, checklists, a bibliography, listing
of workshops and websites
The
program will be action & decision-oriented utilizing foundational
knowledge and theory, practical application, and personal and
collective reflection. The method of delivery is computer-supported,
team-based, experiential and collaborative learning. Participants
will develop / hone skills.
Learning
Objectives:
- Explain
the pitfalls in facilitating change
- Describe
specific organizational pathologies that inhibit change
- Address
various forms of active and passive resistance:
- Gain
insights and become more aware of your “triggers”,
models and limitations by describing two ways you might
be undermining the success of a current change initiative
and devise actions to overcome them
- Using
business scenarios, practice determining what needs to
be done; state how you would apply change tactics based
on the stage of development of the targeted individuals;
identify the levers that can deliver maximum gain for minimum
effort; and, ascertain when the time is right to pull the
lever.
- Describe
the incremental progression towards adoption model – the
progressive evolution of attitudes upon first hearing about
an innovation to final adoption.
